First Road Race Tips
Sponsored by Feetures!

So you think you are ready to enter your first road race?

Let’s also assume you have done some training and have confidence you can finish the race, be it a 5K (3.1 miles) or a 10K (6.2 miles), the race distances you should start with.

You need the necessary gear as far as shoes, socks, shirt and pants are concerned. If it’s summer, a cotton singlet or t-shirt and running shorts are best. If it is winter, you will want to layer. Many runners like a headband or visor to keep the sweat out of their faces. A safe bet is that you will overdress for your first race.

You should be careful in selecting your first race. You can find out what races are scheduled at a running store, from running magazines, daily newspapers, the Internet or your running friends. Sign up early to avoid the higher fees nearer race day. Many runners like to familiarize themselves with the race course before the race itself, either by running or driving it.

For a 5K or 10K, carbo loading is probably not necessary and eat lightly beforehand or you’ll pay for it during the race. Drink water before the race and particularly if it is hot, stop at water stations to replenish fluids.

As for the race day itself, arrive on time to make sure you get a parking place nearby and have plenty of time to warm up and orient yourself.

One final word - virtually every race gives you a t-shirt with the fee. Don’t wear it for the race itself. That brands you as a novice!
