I recently had some foot troubles (duty boots were the culprit) and have orthotics now. The Podiatrist recommended New Balance and Brooks shoes with good reasons. I wear a ladies 11.5 and need a good fit with adequate toe room which these have. They are also very attractive even on my big feet. When this slick strip met the smooth surface of my treadmill's belt, I was slip slidin' away. Whoa, Nellie!! I have worn the shoes outside and tried to rough up the plastic strip. The New Balance WW811 has been the only shoe that feels comfortable with the addition of my bulky orthotics. Seriously. In my case, the challenge is accommodating size 12, narrow, flat foot… one foot 1/2 size larger than the other, one foot with a prominent bunion. When I found this shoe, the quest was over. Woohoo! The 811 has enough give to fit my quirky feet. Very comfortable. I like the roomy toe box. Fits like a glove; no break-in needed. Since they are synthetic, I expected to feel hot and/or a little sweaty in these. As it turns out, I wore them DURING A HEATWAVE in NYC with normal walking socks and my feet did not feel hot or sweaty - surprising. (Guess the ventilation holes REALLY do the job.) Also, the synthetic material is much softer and pliable than I expected. I am going to use my own arch supports with these shoes, I have problem arches. These shoes are not pretty, but when your feet are hurting, style is not #1 on the list of priorities. They look ok with a pair of jeans or other long pants. I would definitely recommend these to anyone with ankle problems and/or wide feet. I'll be looking for other New Balance shoes with the rollerbar insert - that thing is a huge help for weak ankles.
