The 854s were immediately uncomfortable. They feel weird when you walk (they don't bend easily), don't seem to have as much arch support, and are cut weird around the ankle. I repeatedly took my shoes off, took out the insole, without discovering anything that would give this sensation, except long threads extending from the toe, which I trimmed. I ordered the MX854s in (12N) and they were a bit snug in width initially (my shoe size is 12A), so anyone with a true B width may find the Narrow width very snug. They are considerably stiffer than other New Balance athletic shoes - the stiffness seems to be decreasing with additional wear, but still noticeably stiff - definitely not a running shoe! I have high arches and would prefer more arch support, but is acceptable as is. Good looking shoe - does not have the "orthopedic" look of many walking shoes. I bought two pairs with this order as I have custom orthotics, and it took me months to find a pair of shoes that were comfortable with my insoles. Many shoes have an arch built into the sole that causes a pressure point on the arch of my foot when my custom insoles are put in. Others do not have removable insoles. Didn't really have a choice, but to pay the price for this shoe. Zappos’ price was the same as local shoe stores, but they came overnight, instead of a 2-week special order. They fit perfectly, very true to size. I ordered them for stability to see if I could wear them without my orthotic inserts, which I have worn now for two decades due to extreme pronation of my feet. Also my arches fell about ten years ago. My orthotics are built up a LOT on the inside of the device to compensate for the pronation. I have had the New Balance 854s about 2½ weeks now and have found them to keep my feet extremely stable with very little if any pronation. I have been able to wear them so far without inserting my orthotics in place of the removable insert that comes with the shoe. This makes wearing the shoe a lot more comfortable because this insert has some padding, whereas my orthotics do not. Plus this could save me about $400 if I don't have to go to a podiatrist and buy another pair of orthotics when these wear out, or at the very least send them in to get them recovered, which costs about $100. The New Balance Rollbar with TPU post technology is great. It does a great job of keeping my foot from pronating. I am going to order a pair of brown and a pair of black stability New Balance shoes to wear with slacks and jeans when the weather get cold. Right now I am just wearing my white New Balance 854s with jean shorts all summer. I have tried NB cross trainer 300, 400, 600, 700 series, all do not compare to the 800 series. I had 851, 852, and 853 - just bought 854. Received them, took them out of the box, placed my orthodics in, and off I went. Great support, great fit, and great feel. I recommend them highly. As a matter of fact, I am going to buy a woman's pair for my wife. Other shoes recommended by reviewer: NB 1000 series.
