You can't go wrong - doesn't hit the ankle. And of course, Zappos is the best website with the greatest customer service! This past purchase, I bought an 8.5 - Wide shoe not realizing that I could have probably used the 8.5 regular - increasing the size would probably have given me the bit of extra width I needed. So for those who may increase their size, then you might want to consider trying regular width first. The fit on this style is great. The toe room is very ample (I can wiggle my toes inside the shoes.) the instep is nice and high. There is good padding under foot and the style is modern and not old ladyish. I am handicapped so I wear them whenever I go out. They have very good support. I ordered my correct size and I have mega room for my feet to feel comfortable. I recommend them for anyone who needs a comfortable walking or working shoe. This is the only New Balance black shoe I've found that doesn't slip on my narrow heel. I put in a lot of miles at work walking between buildings. The website suggested to buy a size larger than I wear, which is what I did, knowing that is a true statement, as I've worn New Balances before. If I could've been able to try the size smaller, then I'd know that I would be able to fit into it better than the larger one, which is a little big. I definitely needed the Wide. The area around the ankle rubs next to the tongue. I added insoles and that helped a lot. New Balance is a good shoe, but it could've had more padding in the heel area.
