They are actually shiny patent leather, very flashy. I wear them to work nearly every day, and being that I am a personal trainer, I need good shoes for standing long periods of time. These are super comfortable, stable, and a great conversation piece at the gym :). I have the silver/white one and it goes with whatever I wear. The gel cushioning is great in the shoe. I also purchased the Volleycross and returned it because it doesn't fit your foot well like this one. I feel like I’m playing barefoot (just with cushion) which I love. I gave it 4 on comfort just because the vinyl at the top of the shoe (which is supposed to be protective) doesn't flex well with your foot and bends inward causing a little discomfort. I can overlook it because everything else about it is great. I'm hoping with a little wear and tear it will be more flexible. Top
